DMAP Tags Released October 8 for Doodletown WMA Deer Management Effort
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has confirmed that Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) tags will be available starting October 8 for the deer hunt at Doodletown Wildlife Management Area (WMA). These tags are specifically designated for harvesting antlerless deer within this region of Columbia County.
Hunting Supports Ecological Balance at Doodletown WMA
Covering over 1,000 acres across the towns of Ancram, Taghkanic, and Gallatin, Doodletown WMA provides essential habitat for numerous species dependent on early successional forest. Among them is the New England cottontail, a species classified as special concern in New York due to its reliance on dense, young forest understory.
According to DEC Region 4 Director Sean Mahar, properly managed deer populations through programs like DMAP are critical for promoting forest regeneration and maintaining the ecological integrity of the area. Excessive deer browsing pressure can severely inhibit the growth of native shrubs and tree seedlings, which in turn threatens habitat availability for vulnerable wildlife.
Tag Distribution Details
- DMAP tags will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Distribution will take place at the Ancram Town Hall parking lot (1416 County Rd 7) on October 8, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Hunters must present valid New York State hunting licenses to receive tags.
- Any remaining tags after this event will be available at the DEC Region 4 headquarters in Schenectady. Interested hunters can call (518) 357-2154 for details.
Wildlife Expert Perspective
Effective deer population management through targeted harvests of antlerless individuals helps mitigate overbrowsing, which can disrupt forest ecosystems. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), when not properly controlled, can prevent the regeneration of tree species and reduce habitat complexity essential for species like the New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis).
This DMAP initiative at Doodletown WMA aligns with contemporary wildlife management principles that integrate hunter participation as a tool for conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable forest dynamics.
