Officials Seek Information on Headless White-Tailed Deer Found Along Snake River
BLACKFOOT — Authorities are investigating the discovery of a white-tailed deer carcass found with its head removed, discarded along the banks of the Snake River between Blackfoot and Firth, approximately half a mile south of East River Road.
The deer was discovered between September 20 and 23 by a member of the public, who reported the carcass to Idaho Fish and Game officials. According to their statement, the buck was illegally killed using a rifle in an area where only controlled archery hunts are permitted during the season running from August 30 to December 19.
Illegal Kill Contravenes Established Hunting Regulations
Idaho Fish and Game confirmed that Unit 68A permits only archery hunting during this period, making the use of a rifle unlawful. Moreover, the removal of only the head, leaving the rest of the animal’s body to decay, represents a clear case of wasteful illegal harvest.
Senior Conservation Officer Sawyer Livesey noted that it remains unclear whether the animal was shot from a boat on the Snake River or if the carcass was dumped into the river post-mortem.
