Brown County Rifle Range Prepares Hunters for Deer Hunt 2025
SUAMICO — Though Deer Hunt 2025 is still several months away, Brown County’s rifle range has already opened its doors to local hunters getting ready for the season.
The range kicked off its opening weekend with many returning visitors, a tradition for some. Jason Petrella, Program and Natural Resource Manager for Brown County, reports strong early participation, particularly from families preparing for the upcoming Youth Hunt in October.
“We’re seeing a lot of kids and parents out here, helping young hunters become familiar and comfortable with firearms while sighting in their scopes,” Petrella explained. This early practice is critical for responsible and accurate marksmanship, especially for younger participants.
Facilities Designed for Safety and Precision
The Brown County Rifle Range offers 10 firing lanes with distances varying from 25 to 100 yards. This range of distances enables hunters to simulate real hunting conditions, as deer are typically engaged at varying distances depending on terrain and visibility.
New this year, the range features a canopy that shields shooters from rain and morning sun glare, enhancing safety and comfort. Park Ranger Ben Gordon emphasizes the importance of meticulous firearm preparation and range assistance.
- Gordon tracks test shots to assist hunters in making necessary adjustments.
- Staff are available to guide shooters in improving accuracy and safety protocols.
“It’s essential to have your rifle precisely zeroed with the ammunition you plan to use,” Gordon stated. Accurate shot placement is critical for an ethical hunt, reducing the risk of wounding deer and promoting humane harvests.
Encouraging Confidence Among New Hunters
Petrella noted the significance of these early range visits in helping hunters manage first-shot nerves, particularly among novices and youth. Comfort with the firearm before entering the field helps promote safety and ethical hunting practices.
The rifle range remains open on weekends through October and then expands to daily hours until November 20, right before the gun-deer season opens on November 22.
Biological Context: Proper Preparation Supports Sustainable Deer Management
Seasonal deer hunting helps maintain healthy population levels by balancing growth with habitat capacity. Practices like sighting in rifles ensure quicker, more humane kills, which is vital for both animal welfare and effective population control.
White-tailed deer, the predominant species hunted in Brown County, exhibit heightened alertness during the fall rut, influencing hunter success and ethical shot opportunities. Adequate preparation at ranges like Brown County’s supports hunters in meeting these challenges responsibly.
